What are props?
Props in gameplay are the props of the game scene, which immerses the player in the atmosphere and helps to assess the situation. The appearance of props tells about the object itself, the nuances of its history and even the habits and characteristics of the owner. The closer the object is to the player and the more often it appears on the screen, the more attention should be paid to its detail.
There are several ways to tell an object's story:
- Artificial aging - layering textures and using aging filters.
- Adding signs of deterioration - corrosion, scratches and dents.
- Individualization - adding drawings, stickers and other elements that are designed to be unique.
How do I use props?
Various sizes of props are applied to the raw structural geometry. To prevent the player from getting the feeling of cheating when looking at objects closely, the number of polygons, texture, comprehensiveness, and quality of materials should be clearly read. This is especially important for objects in the foreground.
By the way, be sure to keep in mind that props have three different plans:
The primary plan
These are the large elements of an object and the constituent parts of its form. They are the first thing the player pays attention to. Also, these elements should be clearly visible from afar. The designer's main task is to separate such details from each other and from their surroundings. This can be done with color, contrast, and texture.
The second plan
Not, these are constituent parts of the first plan parts or their deformations. They are visible not only while interacting with the object, but also, for example, while walking around the location. However, for full readability the player must pay attention to them. Such details can serve as a trigger of interest, an incentive to approach the object, examine it and use it if possible, etc.
The third plan
These are subtle accents: dust, fingerprints, and small scratches. The player can discern them while using the object or cat scene. Third-panel details are important to create an authenticity effect. They bring the digital object as close as possible to its real prototype.
All three plans should interact with each other, complementing and enriching the story being told. If they contradict each other, the player will have dissonance and the impression of the game may be broken.
But how are the details of the game environment created in the first place?
The process of selecting props begins with finding references that match the structural geometry and stylistics of the game.
Then, low-polygonal 3D models are created to reproduce the shape of future props, as well as their normals are set.
Smoothing is used to improve the visual quality of the model.
Complete the work by sweeping the model to impose a texture map on it, as well as by selecting all the necessary details.
The finished high-polygonal model is exported to the game engine.
As a rule game objects are assembled from several ready models. If finer details (patterns, chips, cracks) must be present on the high-poly models, a sculpting technique based on the principles of classical modeling is used.
